It is a climbing, deciduous shrub that can reach a height of approximately 10 m. It is a very vigorous plant that grows rapidly (although less than P. quinquefolia). The woody stems are slender, the shoots are short, highly branched, and equipped with suckers that allow it to grow even on very smooth surfaces. In winter, the dense network of shoots on walls can also have ornamental value. The leaves are trilobed, 15–20 cm long; they are green in color, turning purple-red in autumn, with a highly decorative and ornamental effect. The flowers are small and insignificant, yet they give off a pleasant scent during the flowering period (June–July). The fruits are small, round berries that are blue-black when ripe (in summer).
