A deciduous, upright, bushy shrub (broadleaf), slow-growing, reaching a maximum height of 4-5 m and a diameter of 3-4 m. The bark, over time, takes on an ash-gray color. The branches are dense and equipped with long thorns. The leaves, elongated to lanceolate, smooth, are green and sometimes reddish. In autumn, they take on a magnificent golden-yellow color. The elegant, funnel-shaped flowers, solitary or in clusters of three, are coral red in color: they appear in May and are found until August.
The resulting fruits are berries up to 10 cm in diameter, red or orange and yellowish, containing edible reddish-purple seeds. They ripen in October. The plant is particularly beautiful during the flowering period, when the fruit is ripening, and in autumn.
