A shrub or small tree (broadleaf), evergreen, reaching a height of about 10 m, with an erect, bushy habit and regular crown. It grows relatively slowly, becoming hardy only in temperate or warm climates, but regrows easily from the base. The aromatic leaves are leathery, lanceolate, and pointed, smooth and dark green on the upper surface, lighter green underneath. The flowers are not very showy. They are yellow in color and appear in early spring (March-April). The fruits are ovoid, blackish berries that ripen from September to November. They are also aromatic.
