An evergreen shrub native to the East (China and Japan), it is cultivated for its beautiful foliage and flowering. It has a low, compact growth habit, and over time, it forms small bushes up to 2 meters tall (half the size if grown in a pot). The leaves are leathery, rounded, asymmetrical, and a beautiful dark red (almost black) color, with pronounced veins. The flowers require mild temperatures year-round to bloom; they appear in early spring and late autumn. They are small, with four ribbon-like petals, clustered in highly ornamental fuchsia-pink terminal clusters.
